OVERVIEW
It is the overlooked, the ironic, the confrontational and dare one say, the beautiful that interests me. I am drawn to simplicity and to the symbolic and yet sometimes the essence of something can only be found through complex representation, the acceptance of a time-based narrative from a multi-layered painting, video or essay.
We are often consumed by digital lives of artifice, where space, time and even our sense of self is fractured and compressed by market forces towards branded serial novelties. Yet at the same time our humanity is rooted in the organic and the archetypal consolations of history, compassion, curiosity and slow inquiry.
For me the challenge of being modern is to forge a path between the two, to create a personal narrative that is largely inspired by the present and yet is not an intellectual slave to it, to discover our inner selves and yet strive to place it within a meaningful social frame.
